As an old-time newspaper guy, I have a habit of wanting to check facts, because even though every word out of Donald J. Trump’s mouth has been a lie so far, I can’t help thinking that maybe this time he’s telling the truth. So when Trump told New Jersey golfing buddies recently that one reason […]
I’ve been single most of my adult life. Don’t believe me? I was eighteen when I had my last boyfriend. You know, the holding-hands-staying-over-every-night-meeting-the-family-and-friends-making-future-plans sort of boyfriend. The guy that you introduce to everyone and they go awww when they see you two together. The guy that you introduce to your friends and they’re actually happy for […]
Latest information surrounding the future of Nigeria and Manchester City forward, Kelechi Iheanacho is that he has joined Leicester City. Kelechi Iheanacho Reports from England reveal that the player has completed a £25 million move from City to the Foxes after passing a medical. According to sources, the fee makes the Super Eagles star the most expensive Nigerian player ever, displacing Odion Ighalo when he signed for Chinese club Changchun Yatai for £20m in January. Meanwhile, the move is the second highest African transfer fee this season behind Egyptian international, Mohamed Salah’s £34.3m move from Italian Serie A side, AS Roma to Liverpool. Although the move was delayed by legal issues over image rights with his former agents, sources close to the player confirmed that after passing his medical on Tuesday, the player signed a five-year contract with the Foxes. However, an announcement is only expected within the next 24-48 hours as the club wants to tidy up legal details in respect of his former representatives. It is also mentioned that the Citizens have inserted a buy-back option in the contract, which is reported to be in the region of £50m for one of Europe’s brightest young footballers. It is unlikely, but Iheanacho could be announced in time to be involved in Friday’s friendly against Borussia Monchengladbach at the King Power Stadium. Leicester’s capture of the 20-year-old, who scored 26 goals in his 71 appearances across all competitions and friendlies for Manchester City, brings to three the number of Nigerians at the King Power after Ahmed Musa and Wilfred Ndidi. Not one of Europe’s ‘Big Five’ leagues has yet kicked off but the Champions League has already been up and running since the end of June.
dabblebet: PSG to win the CL at 12/1
Indeed, we’re just about to reach the play-off round, when things start to get really interesting for some of Europe’s top clubs.
Five-time winners Liverpool and Europa League legends Sevilla are just two of the sides who are about to find out which team stands in their way for a place in the group stage of the 2017-18 Champions League…
The draw for the Champions League play-off round will take place in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday, August 4.
The proceedings are scheduled to get under way at noon Central European Standard Time (CEST), which means 11:00 in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The draw will be streamed live on UEFA’s official website from 12:00 CET.
It will also be broadcast in the UK and Ireland on BT Sport, its website and its app, with the coverage scheduled to begin at 11:00 BST.
In the United States, the draw can be watched with the Fox Soccer Match Pass from 06:00 Eastern Time (ET).
The play-off draw will consist of 20 teams, who will be evenly divided into two sections: the Champions Route (for league winners) and the League Route (non-champions).
Looking at the two pots, the big news is that 2005 winners Liverpool are back at Europe’s top table for the first time since suffering a miserable Champions League group-stage exit three years ago.
Having finished fourth in the Premier League last season, the Reds will be taking the League Route, alongside Maurizio Sarri’s wonderful Napoli side, who gave Real Madrid a couple of scares before bowing out in the round of 16 last term.
How PSG will line up with Neymar
Sevilla are also seeded in the League Route thanks to the fact that they won three successive Europa Leagues between 2014 and 2016.
Sporting CP joined them due to the coefficients of the five teams that made it through Wednesday’s third-round play-offs, with CSKA Moscow making up the fifth after overcoming AEK Athens.
Joining Hoffenheim in the unseeded after Wednesday’s action are Steaua Bucuresti, Young Boys, Nice and Basaksehir.
Seeded teams | Unseeded teams |
Sevilla | Steaua Bucuresti |
Napoli | Young Boys |
Liverpool | Nice |
CSKA Moscow | Hoffenheim |
Sporting CP | Basaksehir |
The Champions Route comprises of the 10 league winners that came through the third qualifying round second legs.
Here is how things look after full-time on Wednesday:
HOME | AGG | AWAY |
---|---|---|
BATE Borisov | 2-2 | Slavia Prague (unseeded) |
Legia Warsaw | 2-3 | Astana (unseeded) |
FH | 0-2 | Maribor (seeded) |
Copenhagen (seeded) | 4-2 | Vardar |
Rosenborg | 0-1 | Celtic (seeded) |
Ludogorets | 3-3 | Hapoel Be’er Sheva (unseeded) |
APOEL (seeded) | 4-1 | Viitorul Constanta |
Rijeka (unseeded) | 1-1 | Red Bull Salzburg |
Sheriff Tiraspol | 1-2 | Qarabag (unseeded) |
Olympiacos (seeded) | 5-3 | Partizan |
The first legs of both the League and Champions play-off round ties will take place on August 15 and 16, with the return fixtures scheduled for August 22 and 23.
We already know the identity of 22 of the teams that will participate in the 32-strong group stage for this season’s Champions League.
Real Madrid are obviously the star attraction, having become the first side to successfully defend the title by defeating Juventus in last season’s final in Cardiff in May.
All the latest transfer rumours
As you can see in the table below, they will again face some stellar competition, not least from their eternal rivals Barcelona but also Paris Saint-Germain, who are just about to prise Neymar away from the Catalan club.

While the cast is arguably stronger than ever, some headline acts have missed out on qualification this season.
Inter, who conquered Europe only seven years ago, have no European football at all to look forward to this year, after a shocking seventh-placed finish in Serie A.
However, it is Arsenalwho are most conspicuous by their absence. The Gunners had never failed to qualify for the Champions League during Arsene Wenger’s two-decade long reign in north London but they missed out after being pipped to fourth place in the Premier League by Liverpool.
A new study on player wages has claimed that Barcelona may not be getting their money’s worth out of Lionel Messi’s astronomical weekly salary.
Barcelona 19/20 to win La Liga
The Argentine has won the Ballon d’Or an unprecedented five times since making his debut at Camp Nou, helping Barca to a decade of glittering success.
That wonderful talent has been duly compensated with a salary package that makes Messi one of the richest men in sport, alongside Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
According to the International Journal of Computer Science in Sport, however, he may not merit such a high valuation.
The IJCSS compiled salary data and performance analysis from Europe’s top leagues in their study, choosing 2016 as a base year.
Variables such as age, position, club and a whole host of attribute evaluations in key areas were collected and run through an algorithm designed to determine each player’s ‘real’ worth.
And despite his status as one of the finest players in the world, Messi comes out at the top of the list of overpaid stars, with the IJCSS contending his true value is some €320,000 lower than his actual weekly wage.
Football’s biggest release clauses
“Clearly, the salary of a football player is affected by numerous factors that are not directly related to performance or skills. For instance, a player liked by the fans can have higher compensation to reflect merchandise and ticket sales,” the report concludes.
“For instance, a player such as Lionel Messi receives a weekly wage of €550,000 given that part of it is sponsorship, merchandise sales, image rights, and other incomes outside the scope of wins or performance on the field.
“Using pattern recognition, Messi’s predicted salary computed based on the performance and wages of the current football players in the major football leagues would have been about 50% less, although according to the method he would still be the world’s highest paid player.”
Fellow Argentine Angel Di Maria and Galatasaray’s ex-Arsenal star Robin van Persie complete the podium.
Player | Actual wage (In €, 2016) | Predicted Wage |
---|---|---|
Lionel Messi | 550,000 | 243,333 |
Angel Di Maria | 230,000 | 58,974 |
Robin Van Persie | 210,000 | 61,428 |
Ivan Rakitic | 180,000 | 61,556 |
Nicolas Otamendi | 180,000 | 61,556 |
Edin Dzeko | 165,000 | 53,873 |
Philippe Coutinho | 170,000 | 60,552 |
Isco | 170,000 | 60,552 |
David Luiz | 170,000 | 61,599 |
Sergio Busquets | 220,000 | 115,342 |
Conversely, Harry Kane and Bernardo Silva appear as the most underpaid players on the IJCSS list.
Kane has of course since signed a lucrative new contract with Tottenham, while Bernardo will line up at Manchester City next season after completing a move from Monaco.
Player | Actual wage (In €, 2016) | Predicted Wage |
---|---|---|
Bernardo Silva | 10,000 | 119,907 |
Harry Kane | 15,000 | 119,798 |
Granit Xhaka | 70,000 | 171,176 |
Timo Horn | 25,000 | 119,581 |
Francisco Alcacer | 80,000 | 170,588 |
Gelson Dany Batalha Martins | 30,000 | 119,472 |
Renato Sanches | 35,000 | 119,364 |
Paul Nardi | 25,000 | 104,548 |
Andrea Pirlo | 50,000 | 129,500 |
Lavyin Kurzawa | 50,000 | 119,038 |

Manchester United have already brought in the likes of Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic, but latest reports from Express claim that the Red Devils are favourites to complete a £50 million deal for Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes.
The bookmakers also seem to agree with them with BetStars making Manchester United just 3/1 favourites to complete the signing ahead of rivals Chelsea at 7/1 and Valencia at 14/1.
“Jose Mourinho seems to have set his sights on signing fellow countryman Andre Gomes from Barcelona this summer in a bid to bolster his attacking options ahead of the start of the new season,” BetStars Director Ian Marmion said.
“The 24-year-old struggled to make an impact in his debut season at the Nou Camp last term. And the Catalans are reportedly willing to let the young midfielder go, which has put the Red Devils on high alert. United currently lead the chase to land the Portugal international at 3/1, ahead of rivals Chelsea at 7/1, while Valencia are priced at 14/1 to make a move for their former protege.”
The Portuguese international impressed one and all with his performances at Valencia in the 2015/16 season leading to Barcelona spending huge money to secure his signature. However, Gomes struggled to replicate his good form at the Camp Nou and it seems like the Barcelona board are ready to greenlight his sale in order to revamp their jaded midfield.

Although Gomes has struggled at Barcelona, it is believed that Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is a huge fan of his countryman’s talents. The ‘special one’ wants to give his midfield a completely fresh look and the signing of Gomes along with the arrival of Matic will certainly achieve that.
All good squads need depth and quality to win the Premier League and 5 top quality midfielders like Matic, Pogba, Herrera, Carrick and Gomes can certainly achieve that for the Red Devils.
On the other hand, Barcelona who look like they will be losing Neymar are also ready to lose Gomes and give a fresh and young look to their ageing midfield. A lot of transfer business is expected to go on in Barcelona in the coming weeks.

Do you guys Gomes is a good signing for United? He certainly has potential!
Lionel Messi has paid tribute to Neymar ahead of the Brazilian’s imminent world-record move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain, wishing him luck at his new club.
Confirmed: Barcelona give Neymar permission to complete £198m PSG transfer
The 25-year-old winger was given permission to leave Barca’s training in order to complete a move to PSG after the French giants committed to paying his £198 million release clause.
Neymar’s transfer will smash the previous record, held by Paul Pogba’s £89m move to Manchester United last summer, and should be completed by the end of the week.
It has been claimed that Neymar’s motivation to leave Barca is born out of a desire to escape Messi’s shadow and be the main man somewhere else, though if there is any animosity between the two he did not let it show in a classy Instagram post on Wednesday afternoon.
‘It was a huge pleasure to have shared all these years with you my friend,’ he wrote on Instagram.
‘I wish you good luck in this new stage of your career.’
Neymar and Messi spent four years together following his move from Santos and formed an exhilarating partnership, especially when Luis Suarez arrived a year later.
The now infamous ‘MSN’ attack scored an incredible 228 goals in La Liga during that time, one every 39 minutes.
Neymar is expected to receive a salary on par with what Messi currently earns at Barca, around £27m per year after tax.
The Catalan club have already been linked with a number of replacements as they look to find a new wingman for Messi, with Ousmane Dembele, Paulo Dybala and Philippe Coutinho top of their wish list.
Alexis Sanchez returned to Arsenal yesterday to be told that he won’t be joining Chelsea or Manchester City this summer, according to reports.
The Chilean reported back for training on Tuesday after his return from holiday was delayed due to a bout of flu.
Pictures from Sanchez’s session at Arsenal’s London Colney training base showed last season’s top scorer as all smiles, however he was given news he didn’t want to hear.
The Times report that Wenger held a meeting with Sanchez in which they discusses the Chile international’s future.
With the 28-year-old having just 12 months remaining on his contract there has been much speculation that he will leave this summer.
However Wenger has told Sanchez that he will not sanction his sale to a Premier League rival, which rules out a move to Chelsea or Manchester City.
Sanchez is understood to have made the latter of those interested clubs his favoured choice with the opportunity of linking up with Pep Guardiola the lure.
The report though suggests that Wenger hasn’t totally ruled out selling Sanchez, who could yet command a fee in the region of £50m, but only to a club abroad.
